32歳で亡くなった妻の死に顔を描きながら、モネは悲しむより先に「色」を観察してしまう自分に気づいて、ぞっとしたそうです。

そのことを打ち明けたのは、40年近くたってからでした。

1879年9月、長いあいだ彼のモデルをつとめた妻カミーユが世を去ります。売れない貧しい頃から、ずっと隣にいた人でした。

亡骸を前にして、モネの目に映ったのは、青、黄、灰色。死が彼女の顔に置いていく色の移ろいを、自分が画家として、ほとんど反射で目で追っている。「この顔を覚えておきたい」と思うより、先に、です。

この絵は売られることも、人前に出されることもなく、モネの寝室にかけられたまま生涯手元に残りました。署名もありません。下にある名前は、没後に息子が押した印です。

愛することと、画家であることを、最後まで切り離せなかった人なんですよね。
