New preprint from @DeWeeseLab!
TLDR: experiments show neurons in primary visual cortex are tuned for lower spatial frequencies earlier in development. We show the theory of sparse coding is sufficient to account for this phenomenon.

A hamster has been trading cryptocurrencies in a cage rigged to automatically buy and sell tokens since June by running on a wheel & strolling through tunnels: it's currently outperforming the S&P 500, its portfolio being up ~24% on Friday [read more: https://t.co/ZM9P2MvgCE]
Come check out our project with @s_y_chung at @neur_reps! TLDR: Unsupervised learning of representations using retinal waves (real spontaneous neural activity data collected by @MiahPitcher!) points towards a biologically plausible means of learning object recognition.
A lot of Machine Learning (ML) I learned during my Ph.D. was from youtube. I didn't have a guide to do this effectively and thus here it is:

@tootyawbatriz The obstacle is the models in question take static images as their inputs like a CNN would, and performs inference on each image independent of other images in the batch. We’re working on a version that can process images in a continuous stream.
@tootyawbatriz@DeWeeseLab Re: sound, we aren’t modeling auditory cortex, but later work might consider the interplay between auditory and visual cortex during development.

@tootyawbatriz@DeWeeseLab The upshot here is that these results as they stand can tell us about how V1 develops w/r/t the spatial statistics of natural scenes, without considering the temporal statistics, which natural movies would give us.
@alienelf I jumped into his mentions once bc he made a comment that the nazis were the ‘real fascists’ implying that anyone opposing fascism today is delusional. like the fascists don’t use the platform that he’s in charge of 🤡
We're excited to share our recent work on the structure of neural network loss surfaces! Congrats to @charles_irl, Jamie Simon, @li_geralde, and @negative_result.
