I was never scared of loving Sheyanne.
Not when she attempted to push me away, not when she retreated, not when she did what she needed to do. I have loved her every day for months. More. I’ve loved her every day for a long time, and I don’t plan on stopping.
“You’re sure?”
He rolls his eyes, “I am. Are you?” He turns it back to me.
“I’ve never been so sure of something in my life. Please come home.”
Home to me.
When he smiles, I wish nothing more that he was already here, so I could touch him, hug him to me.
With flushed cheeks, I let myself smile gently, and this time, he sees it.
Liam’s eyes soften. “If I could wrap that up in a bottle,” he traces my smile, presses his thumb against my lips, “that would be all I need.”
The look he gives me reminds me of the look he gave me when I was cutting his hair, like he could figure me out all with a single look. I want to let him. “Don’t look at me like that.”
His eyes darken, “I’ll look at you however I want.”
If I ever doubted this man loved me, I was obviously delusional. “You think about me, too?”
“I think about you all the time, Sheyanne,” he murmurs. “When I wake up and when I go to sleep. Every moment in between.”
This time apart made me realize it doesn’t matter where we are or how much space is between us. We’ve always been under the same sky, and I know nothing else matters as long as we find our way back again.
I smile when I realize that’s what this is. Our first kiss.
Liam pulls back not even an inch, his lips brushing mine when he says, “You can’t smile when I can’t see it. That’s not fair.”
Liam nods, but instead of letting me go right away, he brushes another soft kiss to the top of my head and rests his chin there, just holding me.
Despite everything else I feel, it feels nice, really nice, to just let myself be held.
“What if I ask nicely?” Liam’s voice is low, and his eyes roam my face.
“I think you missed that opportunity.”
His lips quirk. “I’ll make it up to you.”
“And how would you do that?”
“Make a list.” He leans closer. “Or I’ll just have to figure it out on my own.”
“I wish you would do that more often.”
“Do what?”
“Smile more. Laugh more. Either of the two.” He’s so sure of himself all the time, even when he’s talking about me, and I don’t ever know how to respond. “Your whole face lights up. Like it takes a weight off you.”
That draws a smile out of him, and I inhale, taking it all in. Taking him all in. To my left, the sunset deepens into a darker haze, and right in front of me is a whole different sight, one I’m really starting to like.
He gently grips my face. “It does matter. I don’t get why you fight the things you feel or the things you care about, but you’re allowed to feel however you want. You’re allowed to care. I’ll remind you of that until you believe me, Sheyanne.”
He lets me trace my finger around and around, over his lips and his neck, until I have the feel and shape of him committed to memory and can breathe again.
He just watches me in that quiet way of his. Like always.
The simple act of him holding my hand, his thumb brushing over the thin skin of my knuckles, is enough to chip away at the walls I’ve had up for years and release this unfulfilled need and wanting in waves that wash over me in a continuous pattern.
He treats me gently, carefully, soothingly, while setting me on fire everywhere else. He’s created a place of safety for me, one that only exists with him.
But the way Liam looks at me when I smile, when my lips are barely even beginning to form one, it’s like he can sense it, and his eyes latch on with unwavering focus. Like he wants to see it happen from beginning to end, like he cannot bear to miss it.
