@MichJak That's disappointing to hear! We had brilliant care in ED with elderly relative- we thought it might be partial seizure activity, as she would stop talking mid-sentence and then be momentarily confused before returning to normal. Turned out to be intermittent heart block! ๐ฑ
๐Heart attack symptoms in women can be REALLY non-stereotypical. This may contribute to higher mortality despite heart disease being less common in women. It doesn't have to be in your chest, and it doesn't have to be pain. Don't delay- get checked out. ๐โค๏ธ
@LiangRhea I was shocked recently taking elderly female family member to hospital with arm pain that was of a cardiac quality how rapidly everyone dismissed it! Troponin rise to 30 - medication change - but if I hadnโt pushed I donโt think anything would have been done. So frustrating.
@just_plain_Rick I couldn't believe that such high quality art was on the GC, and for free. We've certainly grown up as a town these last 20 years or so.
Closing soon on 18 Oct- Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art at HOTA on the GC.
My highlights- a melting Titanic, a Transformer x ancient Tang dynasty sancai glaze, and a floating fairytale castle made of... oh. I see. ๐ณ๐คฃ
Don't miss it!
@omapemby73 Thanks Omar! The most recent heatwave has subsided, so it's very pleasant outside again. I imagine it's starting to cool into autumn on your side of the world?
October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth.
Faye Browne's cancer was not seen on mammogram. It became symptomatic when a breast became *perkier*.
โ...pay attention to any changes, not just lumps. Look, feel and take notice when something seems different.โ ๐

@robertaloug@BronFredericks I think it's worse, not better, since AI got unleashed on autocorrect. My devices now regularly imagine words with no bearing on what I'm writing about, and they didn't used to.
@CarolynFahm@RACSurgeons I reckon the students give me much more than I give them. I always come away from these courses having learned new things and feeling very energised. ๐ค
81 ๐คฏ! How have I taught 81 @RACSurgeons courses already? It's flown by in an instant.
We are always looking for more faculty- especially anaesthetists (just 9 nationally) and physicians (zero!- data below from RACS Activities Report 2025). Register here- https://t.co/leB4gUAsp2
@BoogRoberte That's a good question, and I think you're probably right. But it's probably also more than just disrespect- it would be tied up with professional identity, the need to maintain the 'power gradient', the instinctive fear of things that we are not familiar with.
And, as often happens, what if the pt arrives unconscious and alone?
I asked a JW elder once. He looked me in the eye and said 'what's done with good intent is neither a sin for the giver nor a sin for a patient who did not choose. God judges our hearts not our bodies'. ๐โค๏ธ
For those of us taking care of bleeding patients, this changes an important conversation at the bedside.
Respect for faith. Respect for patient autonomy. And understanding exactly what each patient will accept.
Worth the read and being informed.

@just_plain_Rick@aboutasteph I sometimes wonder if it would be any better in savoury flavours. Is drinking a litre of, say, beef broth easier than the cloying fruity flavours? (Nothing prevents the terrible toileting result though ๐
What if the metrics we use to select doctors don't correlate with performance at the job? Coz that's what the data shows. And there are too many barriers for excellent candidates who aren't privileged.
๐Sharee Johnson for the discussion. Listen here-

Important!
'Central chest pressure or tightness is the most common symptom in both women and men. Women are more likely... to have other symptoms, such as breathlessness, nausea or vomiting, unusual fatigue, or pain in the jaw, neck, arms or upper back'.

@ThermiteBanana Like water off a duck's back ๐คฃ
They've clearly never been the only woman in a surgical department. Do not try to lecture me about 'women's safety'- I'd rather be in the forest with a trans person AND a bear, than with a transphobe of any gender. Hate is lethal.
It's a short hop from 'kids shouldn't learn about sexuality + gender' to 'it's ok to persecute sexuality + gender' ๐ฑ
If you know a kid with an especially close friend, or who isn't 100% 'boyish' or 'girly' enough for weirdo grownups- please be their advocate now.๐ฅ๐
@BoogRoberte Doctors truly try their best. And we are always grateful for good advance care documentation! What can be very challenging are patients who arrive with no ID (true 'John/Jane Doe's); or with ID but are truly alone in the world, for various reasons. Always heartbreaking. ๐
@LiangRhea ๐ซ๐ทwe have optional online medical record that includes a section dedicated to end-of-life directives, designated representatives & so on. Hope that if I'm unconscious medical teams will take trouble to consult it. If medics respect otherness, then they will truly do their best.
