Alberta NDP Critic for Justice, Irfan Sabir, and Alberta NDP Critic for Advanced Education, Rhiannon Hoyle, issued the following joint-statement in response to the events at demonstration at the University of Alberta:

“The police response to peaceful student demonstrations at the University of Alberta appears completely disproportionate to student actions. It is unacceptable that student protest is treated as a public safety issue, especially in the wake of a similarly excessive response at the University of Calgary. We are deeply saddened to see Alberta’s first university and one of the country’s historically leading post-secondary institutions appear to abandon the rights of its students to free speech and to demonstrate. 

“Taken together with the Premier’s proud declaration of the end of academic freedom, this is a deeply concerning trend in this province. We expect our post-secondary institutions to stand against this oppression, not link arms with it.

“It would be remiss to not contrast the police response in the last two days to the response to other current protests, on Alberta public property, that have not resulted in evictions, arrests or injuries. 

“Like other attacks on our democracy, this is a distressing erosion of Alberta students’ rights. In this increasingly conflict-ridden world, we call for an end to violent reactions in response to legitimate and Charter-protected peaceful protests.

Universities are a place for free speech, exchange of ideas and protest — they always have been. The images emerging from the University of Alberta are deeply disturbing.

Once again, I’m calling for a full and independent investigation into what happened at the U of A and the U of C, especially in light of what appears to be a disproportionate response.

I think the public is owed an explanation as to why right-wing protests that close borders and cause traffic accidents are allowed to remain while students and human-rights activists are violently removed. The explanation has to be better than “private property.”

I was there yesterday. I left feeling hopeful and inspired by the young activists.
