“Now Send Me Your Story….” There are people in organizations whose work everyone praises, but very few truly understand. Today, I walked with @libeikhare, the communications lead at @CivsourceAfrica. God knows it is not easy to do communications in the social justice world. Many donors will fund programs, activities, workshops, reports, strategy sessions, but communications? Storytelling? Documentation? Visibility? Those things are often treated like optional extras instead of the lifeblood they actually are. And yet, if we do not tell our stories, others will tell them for us. Or worse, they disappear altogether. Sometimes I think communications roles today resemble what “gender focal persons” used to be in many organizations. You appoint one passionate person, celebrate them loudly, then quietly hand them the responsibility of carrying an entire institutional culture change on their back. That is Ednah. She leads our tiny communications department, serving all five entities within the CivSource Group. On any given day, she is juggling service offerings, impact stories, convenings, campaigns, partnerships, reports, graphics, social media, photography, visibility, messaging, and the endless urgency that comes with all of it. And truthfully? We dumped a lot of it on her shoulders. But one thing I deeply admire about Ednah is that she refused to become the organization’s “sole storyteller.” In her gentle but firm way, she has kept insisting that we are the storytellers too. That the people doing the work must also learn to name it, document it, honor it and share it. She has coached us patiently. She has shared templates and storytelling guides. Held one-on-one sessions. Encouraged us when we doubted ourselves. And then come the reminders… “Where is your story about…?” “I loved the pictures you shared. In her gentle but firm way, she has kept insisting that we are the storytellers too. That the people doing the work must also learn to name it, document it, honor it and share it.

She has coached us patiently. She has shared templates and storytelling guides. Held one-on-one sessions. Encouraged us when we doubted ourselves.

And then come the reminders…

“Where is your story about…?”

“I loved the pictures you shared. Now give those pictures life through your words.”

“When can I expect your story?”

“You’re doing well. Now send me the story.”

I laughed as I walked with her because every single one of us at CivSource has received those messages. Again. And again. And again.

And slowly, something is shifting.

People who once thought storytelling belonged to “the comms team” have started seeing themselves as story bearers too.

Is Ednah’s workload lighter now? Not really.

But I know this much: without her persistence, many of our stories would still be sitting silently inside people’s phones, notebooks, memories, and hearts.

Thank you, Ednah for teaching us. For pushing us. For encouraging us. For rebuking us when necessary. For refusing to give up on us.

We are better storytellers because of you. And perhaps more importantly, we are becoming better witnesses to our own work.
