Not one credible source I've read on this case ever mentions rape. Every single one mentions that some boys dared Till to flirt (verbal and physical advances) with the store cashier. Till wasn't aware or how severely southerners reacted to any slight towards a woman (real or perceived) by a negro in 1955. Carolyn Bryant @ 74 yrs old, later claims to have lied about it. The actual, real, immutable truth is impossible to know.

Personally I think Emmet took the dare, but then Carolyn exaggerated things when she told her husband.

Either way, what Emmet Till did (or didn't) do rated a stern talking to at best. That's it. His attackers were psycho nutcases who just happened to be racists.
