Comparing Pancreas Development Across Species to Advance Diabetes Research 🧬
New insights from an international research team led by #HelmholtzMunich and the German Center for Diabetes Research (#DZD) could reshape the future of #diabetes modeling and #RegenerativeMedicine.
💡 Key finding: #Pancreas development in pigs mirrors humans much more closely than in traditional mouse models – from developmental tempo to gene regulation.
Using high-resolution single-cell and multi-omics analysis of over 120,000 pig pancreatic cells, researchers identified evolutionarily conserved gene networks and discovered a previously unknown primed endocrine cell (PEC) population – a potential source for regenerating insulin-producing beta cells.

Today, we report that chronic intermittent fasting impairs beta-cell maturation & function in adolescent mice. Using scRNAseq, we delineated a maturation score for beta-cells. Long-term good if you're older, might be harmful if you are still developing!
