@tangotiger I try to stay away from distinctions based on time on the ballot. The HOF is a binary– players either should or shouldn't be in. But even among first-ballot guys there are plenty of examples: Sabathia, Mauer, Ortiz, Smoltz, etc. Without their 2 best years they're not HOFers.
@RossBarkan Most pitchers today don't reach 200 innings, although I'm not sure what that has to do with the argument anyway. But the odds of someone who hits that weakly turning into a good hitter just by getting more reps seems tiny to me. They were miles behind position players!
@RossBarkan@jaysonbuford They were prevented because they were actually really bad hitters, just somewhat less bad than a typical pitcher. They were both ~63% worse than an average hitter. Regular reps weren't going to change that.
@CodifyBaseball People are forgetting this was the 9th inning of a blowout game. You don't get to keep unused challenges. I doubt he challenges that pitch if it's the 3rd inning.
@rationalyankee He can pinch-hit (mainly for McMahon) and be a defensive sub. He'll probably also get time at first if/when they have Rice catch. There are lots of bench players with fewer uses (including Grichuk)
@CodifyBaseball Went to the annual Cooperstown game in spring 2003. Johnny Bench, Gaylord Perry, Robin Roberts, and Carlton Fisk were standing at the bases on Doubleday Field before the game greeting fans. Shook hands with all of them.
As policymakers consider various proposals for safeguarding younger users online, CCIA’s #Privacy counsel Jesse Lieberfeld (@lieberfeld) wrote an article serving as a guide to understanding most commonly used legal knowledge standards. The article describes existing knowledge standards in U.S. civil law — actual knowledge, reckless or willful disregard, and constructive knowledge — and how some federal online safety proposals seek to import these requirements. https://t.co/Wy3z1tNMBp
@BoomerJanowski@OleTimeHardball The problem is that you can make lists like that for *any good player*. They all have sets of accomplishments that are unique among non-HOFers.
@BarryOnHere He's a good candidate. But the reason he's not in is mainly because he never had a really amazing season. Most HOF pitchers have had a way better peak than 4 seasons in the ~5 WAR range.
