A highway runs straight through this Chicago building — but the strangest part is that the building came first.

The Old Chicago Main Post Office was built in stages between 1921 and 1932, at a time when Chicago’s mail-order industry was booming through companies like Sears and Montgomery Ward. To handle the city’s enormous postal traffic, architects Graham, Anderson, Probst & White designed a massive postal facility of more than 2.5 million square feet.

But planners also knew that a future east-west roadway from the 1909 Plan of Chicago would one day pass through the site. So they left a huge opening through the base of the building — decades before the expressway arrived.

For years, that opening was used for truck entrances. Then, in the 1950s, the Congress Expressway — later renamed the Eisenhower Expressway — finally passed through it.

The building closed as a post office in 1996 and sat empty for decades before being transformed through a massive restoration into offices and event space.

One of Chicago’s boldest examples of planning for a road that didn’t exist yet.
