Unpopular opinion: this is the best Resident Evil movie precisely because it refuses to be a Resident Evil movie in the way most fans wanted.
Cregger didn’t remake RE2, didn’t recast Leon, and didn’t spend 20 minutes explaining the T-virus. He just dropped an out-of-shape medical courier into a night that keeps getting worse and filmed it like you’re the one holding the controller with two bullets left. That “one gigantic sequence” structure, the ammo counting, the dark doorways, the stalker creature that’s the actual DNA of the games, not another origin story for Umbrella.
A lot of the backlash is people wanting the feeling of playing RE2 while also getting the plot of RE2. Those two things have never coexisted well on screen. The Anderson films proved that. Welcome to Raccoon City proved that. Cregger understood the assignment was the panic, not the lore dump.
Is it his weakest film compared to Barbarian and Weapons? Yeah, probably. The ending is abrupt and Bryan is almost too much of a disaster. But calling it “Resident Evil in name only” misses the point. It’s the first live-action version that actually feels like playing one of these games instead of watching someone else play it. That’s rarer than another Wesker monologue.

Not adapting a specific game and dropping the legacy characters might actually be the best thing that happened to this franchise.

Every previous Resident Evil movie tried to cram in characters, mythology and fan-service, and most of them ended up being a mess. Cregger was way more interested in making you feel what it’s actually like to play Resident Evil, being confused, underprepared, scared and constantly wondering what the hell is around the next corner.

and that’s why I think cregger's story works so well. he's not trying to explain every piece of Umbrella lore or spend half the movie explaining the T-virus. It’s literally just one guy trying to survive and get somewhere while monsters keep making his life hell. Maybe Resident Evil never needed to be a perfect adaptation of the games. Maybe it just needed to make you feel like you’re playing one.
