Ángel Di María on Jorge Messi’s Passing
Interviewer 🗣️: Ángel, you’ve known Leo and his family for so many years. What went through your mind when you heard about Jorge?
Di María 🗣️: Honestly… I don't even know what to say.
When someone loses their father, there are no words that can really make the pain disappear. And when it's Leo… it hurts even more because I've seen how much his family means to him.
People see Messi the footballer. They see the trophies, the goals, the World Cups. But I’ve seen Leo the person. I've seen him when things were difficult, when the whole world was against him. And Jorge was always there.
Interviewer 🗣️: What kind of person was Jorge to you?
Di María 🗣️: He was Leo's father before anything else. And that's what I remember most.
He didn't care about the Ballon d'Ors or the records. He cared about his son being okay.
(pauses, visibly emotional)
I remember so many moments when Leo was under incredible pressure, and somehow… his family gave him a place where he could just be Leo.
That's something you don't understand until you lose it.
Interviewer 🗣️: What would you say to Leo right now?
Di María 🗣️: I'd tell him to forget football for a while.
Forget everything.
Forget the trophies. Forget the expectations. Forget what people want from you.
Just go home. Sit with your family. Hug your children. Hug your mother. Remember your father.
Because football will always be there.
Your father won't.
Interviewer🗣️: Do you think Jorge would be proud of Leo?
Di María 🗣️: (smiles through tears) Proud? I think he would be incredibly proud.
But you know what I think?
I don't think Jorge's proudest moment was when Leo lifted the World Cup.
I think it was every time he saw his son come home and be a good father, a good husband, a good person.
That's what matters when everything else disappears.
Interviewer 🗣️: If you could speak to Jorge one last time, what would you tell him?
Di María 🗣️: I'd say…
"Thank you for always being there for Leo."
We all know what Messi gave to football.
But Jorge gave something even more important.
He gave Leo the strength to keep going when football became too heavy.
And now, when Leo looks up and doesn't see him anymore…
I hope he remembers that his father's love doesn't disappear.
It stays with you.
Forever.
(Di María pauses, wipes his eyes and looks down.)
Di María : And Leo… if you're watching this, don't try to be strong all the time.
You're allowed to miss your dad.
You're allowed to cry.
You're allowed to feel broken.
You've spent your whole life making millions of people happy.
Now it's time to take care of yourself.
Your friends are here.
Your family is here.
And your father's love will always be with you.
AGUANTEN CARAJO! 🇦🇷
