The longest Duolingo streak ever recorded hit 4,003 days in January 2025. Ten straight years without a missed lesson. Users with 1,500-day Spanish streaks routinely report being unable to hold a basic conversation with a native speaker.
Duolingo's own data explains why. Only around half of learners who finish the Spanish course achieve A2-level speaking. A2 is the second rung on a six-level scale, meaning you can introduce yourself and handle very basic exchanges. Following a sports commentator at full speed is a different problem entirely.
Part of the issue is raw pace. Spanish native speakers fire roughly 7.82 syllables per second, placing it second-fastest among major languages in a 2019 study in Science Advances. English speakers produce 6.19. Duolingo practices vocabulary at a controlled pace, giving you time to think. Real conversations do not wait.
The business is built around engagement. Daily active users are up 10x since 2019, now past 47 million. The streak system runs on loss aversion (the pull to protect something you've already built up) to keep you opening the app every day, and has cut monthly churn from 47% in 2020 to around 28% today. Five million users have gone a year-plus without missing a day. Duolingo's shareholder reports track DAU, MAU, and paid subscribers. Fluency outcomes are not on the list.
A streak measures app opens. The FSI (the Foreign Service Institute, which trains American diplomats for overseas posts) estimates 600 to 750 hours to reach working proficiency in Spanish. At Duolingo's average session of around 15 minutes, hitting 600 hours takes 2,400 separate sessions. On a daily streak, that is six and a half years.
The vocabulary gap adds to this. Conversational fluency takes roughly 2,000 to 3,000 active words, and reading a newspaper comfortably takes 5,000 to 8,000. Duolingo teaches words in isolation at a controlled pace. That builds recognition but not the fast recall that listening to 7.82 syllables per second demands.
For people who would otherwise do nothing, the app delivers something real. Its studies show reading and listening gains at beginner levels that match classroom instruction.
Spanish course completion rates are estimated at 0.01%. Five million people have kept a streak going without a single missed day. Both numbers make sense for a product built to maximize daily app opens.
@luannachuq Pior que eu queria MUITO que as disciplinas de Latim que eu fiz em Letras tivessem sido melhor ministradas... certeza que me ajudaria muito 🫠

Is the "do something for 21 days straight and it'll become a natural habit" a neurotypical-only thing cause I'm almost 2 months in and still having to force myself
