I just hope y’all give people chances and recognize we all live in our own perceived realities based on an amalgam of life experiences, systemic barriers, and everything in between.
There is so much depth to us all — the cashier at your coffee shop, or the professor at X.
I won an essay contest at my local VFW when I was 15. I still remember the looks of confusion as I went on that stage and gave a speech in front of faces of anger and disdain. Not all of course. But it was memorable & I could feel it in the air.
Because I have felt this feeling everywhere. Even in some of the highest spaces of Academia — where I’ve given speeches to Institutions and Directors of the NIH; or taught in classrooms as a lecturer in some of the ‘finest institutions’.
Re: US Healthcare system aggregated across States
US has been an outlier in healthcare mortality — across the population level — for decades. A trend which continues to worsen.
We actively pay more for healthcare, for worse results with some of the best MD/DO/Prac training
So to be surprised at certain healthcare delivery metrics at the state level is ethnocentric. Iowa is not the world. The US is the not world.
And most HC systems in countries in the world — outperform us across every continent — Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, etc.
I love the idea of raising awareness to limitations in Iowa’s healthcare delivery.
But explicitly highlighting Puerto Rico in this manner aires on the side to suggest Iowa *should* — at the very least — be better than a territory in the Caribbean islands.
Which is prejudice.
lmao this is so true. Some weirdo stopped and stared at my partner and I at in an antique mall for 30 seconds in Iowa; and in the PNW .. .. man people are like, you cannot possibly be a PhD student with an intelligent mind, lemme tell you how great I am?
Some people r so weird
how racism differs by region is so interesting to me. i’ve been exposed to white southern racism all my life but what they got going on in new england, the midwest, california, and the pnw is nuts lmfao and it’s all different
