ARC Raiders Executive Producer admits they never expected this many players after launch
Aleksander Grøndal said launch surprised them and the studio was a bit unprepared. He called it one of the hard lessons they had to learn
When January hit, the dedicated playerbase wanted more content and progression than they had. Embark tried to update fast but the team couldn’t keep pace, and some of what shipped wasn’t as good or as meaningful as players hoped. Another awakening, he said
He also made it clear they’re not going to win on quantity. Embark is a small team. They were down to 24 people at the start, around 60 on average while making the game, and they’re at about 120 now
That’s why they changed the update cadence. Instead of smaller piecemeal drops, they want larger updates with more time spent on quality. The world of ARC Raiders is too crafted to just pump stuff out. When they do that, the quality isn’t there
Grøndal said patience is the reason ARC Raiders even exists. The original concept didn’t work. They reset it, built the extraction game, ran tests, and kept asking for another six months. Nexon gave them that time. That’s what let them refine the qualities that made the game blow up
