🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸

250 years ago, our Founding Fathers declared their independence from Britain, “appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of [their] intentions,” and with a “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,” they pledged their “Lives, [their] Fortunes and [their] sacred Honor.” They understood the weight of their decision—they were risking it all to establish a new country, one that would order itself around self-government and liberty, not raw political power. Informed by the empires of the past and instructed by the Holy Scriptures, they appealed to the God of heaven as the “Supreme Judge” to judge whether their actions were righteous.

They didn’t merely leave the Crown because taxes were too high or whatever other nonsensical secularist reason the progressives have indoctrinated a generation to believe. They left to form a just government subject to the “laws of nature and nature’s God.” The only ultimate authority for our country would not be the king—there would be no king but King Jesus.

250 years later, we have forgotten much of that founding. But just as President Reagan said “freedom is never a generation away from extinction,” so too America is never more than a generation away from revival. Today, let’s rededicate our nation as “One Nation under God” and celebrate “what God hath wrought.”

President John Adams predicted how future generations would celebrate today—and his words remind us of the reverent and jubilant thankfulness with which we should spend the day.

“I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”

I never thought I would get to write an amicus brief about political cartoons and memes. But I recently had the opportunity to do just that, filing a brief in the Ninth Circuit in support of the @TheBabylonBee in its lawsuit against California.

It was an honor to represent @Verge_of_Jordan, head of humanities @NewSaintAndrews in support of @TheBabylonBee and @ADFLegal in this litigation.

🚨IFPC Legal Center files lawsuit against Boise School District! 🚨

The teenage girl we represent twice encountered a biological male in the GIRLS’ restroom at Boise High School after the school district gave him permission to use the restroom as part of a “gender support plan.”

As Legal Center Director @calebforidaho explained: “Encountering a male in the girls’ restroom is a traumatic experience for a young girl, and experiences like those of our client painfully illustrate that reality. We intend to hold Boise School District accountable for its actions.”

We’ve outsourced our processing time to the “algorithm” aka people in mass.
A catastrophe lands.
We react.
A conspiracy blooms.
We react.
The ground shifts again?
Repeat.

No pause. No reflection…the next story is already loading.

In this process I find I am losing the space between stimulus and response.
The moment where thinking happens. Not the performance of thinking…the kind where we construct hot takes while the dopamine is still fresh.
Real thinking.
The uncomfortable kind that requires sitting with something longer than it takes to scroll past it.

And make no mistake, this isn’t about long versus short form content.
You can spend two hours on a podcast and never encounter a single original thought. Length doesn’t equal depth.

What’s missing is contemplation.
The kind that builds arguments instead of reactions, that synthesizes instead of summarizes, that has a rhetoric that persuades instead of performs.
We used to call this critical thinking. Now we call it being late to the conversation.

I don't blame the platforms, they just scratch itching ears well and reward for Being first.
Being loud.
Being certain.

But real ideas don’t work on that schedule or that way. They need time to cure.
They require the friction of counter-evidence, the patience of revision, the humility of “I don’t know yet.” which is almost blasphemy these days to say.

I don't expect the platforma to change before we do. They reflect us, and they’re built to optimize for engagement.
The question is whether we’ll choose to think anyway and optimize ourselves for understanding.

Today was that day for Voddie. When he preached this, he saw by faith. Now, Voddie sees by sight—glorified with Christ forever and eternally free from the penalty, power, and presence of sin.

A great perspective. Theology must be acted upon and loved out. Otherwise it becomes hypocrisy, no matter how biblical the theology is in the first place.

Charlie Kirk was courageous, and he was a true man. His was a very masculine courage.

In his book Orthodoxy, Chesterton summarized this principle of courage nicely: “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.”

Charlie took the initiative. He went into the arena. He did not build an impressively large organization so that he might sit through endless board meetings, doodling on a yellow legal pad. As I said, he went into the arena. He was not the first Christian to surrender his life in that arena, and he most certainly won’t be the last.

And this man, the best of us, was a product of broad evangelicalism. Think about that for a minute. When the devil went after us, he went after the dangerous one—and the dangerous one came from quite an unexpected place. And so I would urge all the brothers who do their theology the way Mary Poppins cleans up nurseries—spit spot—to remember that Charlie had more active Kuyperianism in his little finger than the scores of edge-lords who love typing instead of doing. We can tell from how all this went down who was the first of us to get to the top of the scaling ladders. His name was Charlie.

A final note. While not knowing how time and eternity intersect, I am quite sure that Charlie is proud of his wife Erika. We certainly are.
