The cancellation of the Hamilton Jewish Film Festival by @PlayhouseHamOnt and the textbook antisemitic cartoon in @LP_LaPresse this morning are terrifying and unfortunately all too familiar. It’s reminiscent of 1930s Germany when hateful anti-Jewish propaganda and exclusion of Jews in business and culture led to the slaughter of 6M European Jews as the majority of its citizens stayed silent. Sadly, we’re seeing this again in Canada in 2024 as a lack of guardrails have allowed this hate to grow and become normalized. I will be contacting la Presse as well as the city of Hamilton. No one should be silent in the face of this type of hatred; silence has deadly consequences.

Standing up against #antisemitism needs to be more than words and our true allies must understand when they've buckled to mob rule.

What a small Hamilton theatre has experienced is a fraction of what our community has experienced over the past five months. When the theatre received some threatening phone calls and letters over renting their venue to @JewishHamilton for a Jewish cultural film festival, instead of standing up to the hate, they caved to it.

While we share and understand the concerns of the theatre over security and safety, canceling the event was the wrong thing to do and sends the completely wrong message - it tells those who spread hate that their tactics work.

It's an unacceptable decision.

We're angered and disgusted by the whole situation.
It's a sad day for Canadian values, the arts, and for the people of #Hamilton.

The president of @LP_LaPresse, Pierre-Elliott Levasseur, called B’nai Brith Canada to personally apologize for the antisemitic cartoon that ran in his publication earlier. “To put it mildly,” he said, “this cartoon was completely unacceptable. I am calling to say how deeply sorry we are. We obviously have no excuse for this. We have removed the cartoon and will be publishing an apology later today.”

Levasseur also said the cartoon “slipped through the cracks” after the paper’s long-time cartoonist drew it. “Three of our senior editors are in London (England) and never would have allowed this to be printed.” Levasseur said the paper is “dealing” with the cartoonist and the one editor who allowed the cartoon to be posted. “I’m at a loss for words,” Levasseur said. “This is a horrible horrible error and I wanted to make this apology to B’nai Brith and the Jewish community.”

We are grateful for the prompt response of La Presse to rectify this situation.

.@LP_LaPresse should know that antisemitism is neither funny nor original.

One can criticize Netanyahu (as many Israelis do) without stooping to using antisemitic tropes such as hooked fingers or a big nose.

This kind of drawing contributes to the normalization of antisemitism that has been affecting our community for months.
