Gypsum, the main ingredient of drywall, naturally occurs in some soils. This gypsum outcrop located near Carlsbad, NM has an abrupt transition, with the soil becoming lighter in color and the vegetation becoming sparse.

Gypsum is a mineral found in soils that can create harsh conditions for plant growth. I recently had the opportunity to travel to New Mexico to survey and collect samples from gypsum outcrops and the unique plants able to grow on them. Such an amazing experience!
