Simon Medina searched for his mother and younger brother through the rubble of a collapsed building in La Guaira, Venezuela on Friday after two powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the coastal state.
The confirmed death toll from Wednesday's earthquakes has risen to 1,430. Another 3,238 people are injured, Jorge Rodriguez, the president of the National Assembly, said Saturday afternoon.
I woke up feeling a sort of survivor's guilt that I've felt each time my beloved Venezuela goes through yet another tragedy, but this is on another level. It feels grotesque to watch my people's misery from the comfort western democracy has provided me. I wasn't there when my generation fought on the streets for freedom, im not there now to help pull people out of the rubble as the dictatorship has abandoned them. I know millions of us in the diaspora understand this heartbreak and shame.
Hemos rescatado con vida a Hinda Ramírez, quien permanecía atrapada bajo los escombros de la residencia Arrecife, en Caraballeda.
Gracias Dios, por utilizarnos de esta manera.
