anyone who said ndz is mid because nothing happens story-wise just doesn’t care about sylus’s characterization or sylusmc’s relationship because, while it might not feel as relevant now that we know sylus better and already understand their dynamic, at the time it was so important.

it laid the foundations for so much of what we now know about them. it shows us who sylus is, how he views the world he grew up in, what he values, and how deeply his worldview is rooted in power, control, strength, and the idea that nothing truly submits unless it chooses to.

the whole horse metaphor is basically an early blueprint for their relationship: the fine line between taming and possessing, between submission and obedience, between willingly lowering your defenses and simply being forced to submit to whoever is stronger.

yes, ndz is short. yes, it’s not exactly advancing some massive overarching plot. but calling it mid because nothing happens completely misses what it’s actually doing: characterization and relationship building. it’s establishing the language through which sylus and mc will understand each other later.
