The effort to manage all the nuance in IT is very taxing/time-consuming, because context is everything in IT (and in music, and in all of life, but I digress).
Not just Best Buy/GS but many IT firms as well — Rather than put the time in to study the nuance of the situation and make proposals tailored to the individual/company/situation (and to bill hourly for that, etc) — They will just offer to sell you a replacement for whatever you are having an issue with. For the simple reason that it’s way less effort (practically no effort), whether or not it’s also more lucrative (you might make less money on the margin selling something, as compared to billing for a few hours of work — but you get to skip that work and the need to retain that expertise).
I do understand the logic (I am a network engineer and IT director now, and used to work for consulting firms and managed service providers where I was higher up and had to always consider the business model/situation beyond the pure technical issues). I still have individual clients who are huge pains in the ass because they want a ton of analysis and customization in how we fix whatever their particular issue is. They don’t mind paying me hundreds per engagement but I kind of groan at the PITA. It is a lot Iike cars, things easily get to the point of “dude it would be cheaper for you to just replace this as this point.”
Case in point from a consulting/MS standpoint:
One time I was sent to the Worcester Housing Authority because they couldn’t print. The issue was that they had an AD server (largely not used) doing print services as well — There was a raid array but one hard drive had died long ago (no one was alerted to fix it) and the other had newly failed so the server would not boot. My company was like “if they are interested in a replacement, here’s a quote for $5000 you can give them.” The woman was like “we don’t have this money.” So instead I went around removing all the lab machines from the domain (using singular local account with same passwords), attached the printer to computer #1 and shared it out to the others — Told the lady make sure #1 is on (basically that’s the new “print server”) if people want to print. Functionality was restored so they were fine with this (even happy). We billed them like 500 bucks for my time. My bosses were like “that’s cool I guess man but to focus your effort and maximize profit next time, don’t offer to get crazy like that just quote them for a replacement and if they can’t afford it move on.” Oh. Okay. I thought we were helping people with technical issues and helping them to save money… but I was young/naive 😎
