Integrating #asianamerican history into schools is about teachers interrogating their curricula w/in the context of their classrooms & communities-not just having access to resources. Fun thinking this thru with educators @yuri_education#CurriculumWritingInstitute last week! 1/
I highly recommend his book American History Unbound to integrate AAPI history into K-12 curriculum. Thanks @DrJenHo for telling me about this. Recently advised teachers to use this book!! #restinpower
I am so sad to hear that Professor Gary Okihiro has passed away. He was one of the 1st Asian American Studies scholars I learned about when I started teaching high school history in the late 90s
We're excited to announce that YURI is focusing more on creating our own signature Asian American educational resources geared directly to schools and teachers!
Co-Director @lin_freda met up with history teacher Karalee Nakatsuka & @CHSSP-SO Assistant Director Tuyen Tran at the annual @historyed conference. As an NCHE board member Freda is excited to help bring more AAPI history into their programming!
Thank you @SmithsonianAPA and @yuri_education for organizing the best three days of community building and co-creation. I am so excited to dive into the project that I will be co-creating with @edu_to_empower and @VietRainbowOC representing the OC. 🧡
Great resource..very proud to have worked on this document....over two years in the making. This document will help k-100! There is so much to learn! Thank you @NYCSchools @HSGlobalHistory and especially @Chrismkwok@lin_freda@cath_goulding.
📢Pls RT #miseducAsian June Chat on "AAPI Allyship: Food, Fun, and Fellowship" with @HistoryFrog and @mrshistorylee at 5pm PT/ 6pm MT/ 7pm CT/ 8pm ET on June 6th, 2023!!
NEW AND HORRIFYING REPORT: The Allen, Texas gunman singled out Asians in violent, racist social media posts. At least 4 victims are Asian, 3 from the Cho family. Allen is part of the suburbs north of Dallas where Asian American populations are growing exponentially.
And I shall continue to shout it from the rooftops: History education is essential, and teachers are professionals. @historyed@CBSNews@NAEP_NCES https://t.co/8axhedcAE3
Yet more AAPI stories idk about! Could totally see this being used in an art class - how to draw Scooby Doo like Iwao Takamoto. And then make it interdisciplinary by learning his history in the context of WWII mass incarceration of Japanese Americans
Did you know? The artist behind the original character of Scooby Doo was a Japanese American animator named Iwao Takamoto. He also was the creative mind behind well known animations such as The Flintstones, Lady and the Tramp, and much more! He was born on April 29, 1925.
@quitafor @HistoryFrog@yuri_education Thanks so much! Hoping to make this into a free lesson plan PDF for educators. And yes, another presentation to accompany this.
@DrJenHo @larissalam So messed up & sending hugs to you! Reminded me of my 1st yr teaching & leading the diversity committee talking to the faculty about Native American Heritage Month. An old white male teacher disputed the term NA & said he was born in the US & is a Native American?!
