The study investigates the existence of racial disparities in the dissemination of ideas using the paper citation network in economics. The researchers aim to understand whether there are differences in how research produced by White and non-White scholars is perceived and cited in the field of economics.

The study finds a significant racial citation gap in economics. Papers with at least one non-White author (Black, Hispanic, or Asian) receive 5.1% to 9.6% fewer citations than those authored by White scholars, even after controlling for various factors. The gap is more pronounced for Black authors and in certain fields, such as microeconomics and international economics.
