This morning, the Russians struck an ordinary minibus in Kherson with an FPV drone. Four people were killed and five others were wounded. All necessary services are at the scene, investigating the details. What is absolutely clear is that the bus was civilian.

These are the realities of everyday life in Ukraine’s frontline regions. While partners hesitate over additional supplies of defense equipment, the Russians have long run wild.

On August 14, 1942, the Nazis massacred 1,850 Jews in the small town of Lenin in eastern Poland.

Only 27 were spared—those with skills useful to the German war effort.

Among them was a young woman named Faigel Lazebnik, an amateur photographer.

She learned her family was among the dead when ordered to develop a photograph that showed them in a mass grave: her parents, sisters, and brother.

Before the massacre, the Nazis had set aside carpenters, blacksmiths, and tailors for forced labor. Faye was forced to photograph the invaders.

One Gestapo commander told her, “It better be good, or else you’ll be kaput.” The photograph of her murdered family was the breaking point. She escaped and joined the resistance.

She kept the photo as evidence of Nazi crimes and joined the Molotov Brigade, a group made up largely of escaped Soviet prisoners of war.

She continued photographing to document the Eastern European resistance, determined to counter the myth that Jews went passively to their deaths. “Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter,” she later said. “There was resistance.”

Roughly 30,000 Jews joined partisan groups in Eastern Europe.

Facing hunger, cold, and the constant threat of capture and death, Faye recorded the resistance while also serving as a nurse. “My bed would be the grass, my roof the sky, and my walls the trees,” she recalled.

After Soviet liberation, she was reunited with her two surviving brothers and married Morris Schulman, a fellow resistance fighter she had known before the war.

After the war, the couple helped smuggle people and weapons to support Israel’s fight for independence.

They had planned to go to British-controlled Palestine, but upon learning Faye was pregnant, they settled in Canada instead.

She spent the rest of her life in Toronto and published a memoir in 1995 that included her photographs from the resistance years.

Faye Schulman died in the spring of 2021 at approximately 100 years old.
Her work remains a powerful record of Jewish resistance.
