In 2021, Assam was promised permanent relief from flooding. The public reposed its trust in the government and gave it two consecutive mandates, yet even today, millions of people are affected by floods every year.

If promises remain unfulfilled, the government must accept its responsibility. The public needs effective flood management, robust infrastructure, and concrete results, not assurances.

Nature Doesn't Send Warnings Forever

Sometimes I wonder if we have become so used to hearing the words "floods in Assam" that they no longer shock us the way they should. That's the most frightening part. A tragedy that repeats itself every year slowly turns into just another headline, while the people living through it are forced to rebuild their lives again and again.

This year's floods have once again exposed how fragile life can be when nature decides to take control. The death toll has climbed to 47 after six more lives were lost in just 24 hours. More than 7.21 lakh people across 11 districts are now battling the disaster, with 883 villages affected. Sivasagar has suffered the most, with around 3.75 lakh people impacted, followed by Charaideo with 1.86 lakh and Jorhat with 1.15 lakh. Over 25,375 hectares of farmland remain underwater, while 103 relief camps are sheltering more than 24,000 displaced people.

But for me, the biggest story is what those numbers hide. Behind every statistic is a family wondering where they will sleep tonight, a child missing school, a farmer watching months of hard work disappear beneath muddy water, and elderly people hoping rescue boats reach them in time.

What also stands out is how quickly we move on. We share sympathy for a day or two, then our attention shifts elsewhere while the people in Assam continue living with the consequences long after the cameras are gone. Recovery is never as visible as destruction, yet it is the hardest part.

The rivers are still flowing above the danger mark in several places, and continued rainfall threatens to make the situation even worse. That should concern all of us because disasters like these are becoming more frequent and more intense. They are not just local problems anymore, they are reminders of how vulnerable communities are when extreme weather becomes the new normal.

I don't think Assam needs our pity. It needs consistent attention, better long-term planning, stronger flood management, and support that doesn't disappear once the headlines do. The resilience of its people is inspiring, but resilience should never become an excuse for accepting the same tragedy year after year.

Amidst all this please take a minute to pray for my state Assam. It is facing one of the worst floods in years. More than 40 people have lost their lives, over 100 are missing and overall 5 to 8 lac people are affected. People have lost their homes and communication is disrupted.

Irony is when India was getting drunk on the finals of world cup, assam was drowning. The beautiful state that is ravaged by flood every year is facing worse ever this year..and not to my surprise, no media has its concerns. North east never feels like the mainland. Why?
