Gibo’s Strange Fear of Multipolarity: When Gibo Sounds like Kano (American) more than a Kano…
There is a fundamental problem with Defense Secretary Gibo’s argument: he appears to confuse multipolarity with lawlessness.

At the Seoul Defense Dialogue, Teodoro described a multipolar world as “concerning,” contrasting it with multilateralism and suggesting that multipolarity means states deal transactionally without clear international rules.

But these are not opposites. Multipolarity describes how power is distributed among several major centers. Multilateralism describes how states cooperate through rules, institutions, and agreements. A world can be multipolar and multilateral at the same time.

So what exactly is frightening about a world in which no single country possesses overwhelming political, economic and military dominance? Perhaps that is the question Gibo should answer.

Because listening to him, one might think that the only safe international order is one in which Washington remains the indispensable power. How remarkably convenient.

And here lies the irony: Teodoro himself says smaller countries should not be treated as “pawns with no strategic agency.” Yet portraying the international system as essentially a choice between the supposedly benign U.S.-led order and a Chinese alternative does precisely that: it compresses Philippine foreign policy back into someone else’s great-power competition.

Of course, the Philippines has a legitimate conflict of interest with China in the South China Sea, including Beijing's strong rejection of the 2016 Arbitral Award. But criticizing Chinese behavior is one thing; declaring multipolarity as dangerous is another.

And perhaps this is where Gibo’s rhetoric becomes revealing. Is he defending Philippine strategic autonomy or defending U.S. primacy and strategic interests? Because a genuinely independent Philippine foreign policy should not fear a world with Washington, Beijing, Europe, India, Moscow, ASEAN, and other centers of power. It should learn how to navigate that world intelligently and smartly.

For a country like the Philippines, the objective should be to preserve enough strategic space that neither Beijing nor Washington gets to dictate Philippines’ choices.

So relax, Gibo. Multipolarity is NOT automatically Chinese supremacy. In fact, by definition, genuine multipolarity means nobody gets supremacy, including China. Perhaps what is really “concerning” is not multipolarity. But it is how uncomfortable the likes of Gibo thought of a world no longer organized around one declining superpower.

And if the country’s defense secretary sounds increasingly like the spokesman for preserving global dominance of a “sunset” superpower, Filipinos are entitled to ask: Whose world order are you defending, Gibo, and whose national interest or strategic interest comes first? Is it that of your patron on the other side of the Pacific? Hmmmm…🤔🤔🤔

Marcos now presents the prosecution of his cousin as evidence that nobody is above accountability. Malacañang says that anyone who should be held accountable must answer, whether a relative, friend, ally, or political opponent. That is precisely the correct principle. But Filipinos are entitled to ask whether that principle will be followed to its logical conclusion. Will accountability stop with Romualdez?

Or will investigators follow the money trail, documents/paper trail, budget decisions, contractors, implementing agencies, political intermediaries, signatories, and ultimate beneficiaries wherever the evidence leads?

JUST IN: The Bureau of Immigration confirms Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano have left the country.

The BI issued the statement after the sibling lawmakers were seen in photos at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport yesterday.

“Based on BI records, there were no hold departure orders or derogatory records against the two senators, as of departure date, that would legally prevent them from leaving the country,” the bureau said.

Alan Cayetano is being investigated over alleged irregularities in the country’s hosting of the 2019 SEA Games, as well as alleged anomalous infrastructure projects in his political bailiwick of Taguig. He has denied the allegations. | @eimorpsantos
