This one is getting posted a few days early as Your Correspondent will be occupied at the 18TH Civil War Weekend at the Grange

From our website, "Apart from some overnight rain on Saturday, we had picture perfect weather for our 17th outing at the Grange. Once again, we were joined by the 30th Virginia, the 6th NY Independent Artillery and Town of Islip Town Historian, George Munkenbeck, who we honored this weekend with a surprise 80th birthday celebration. In addition, we had The Sons of Union Veterans, Daughters of Union Veterans, and Society of the Grand Army of the Republic (SOGAR). This year, we debuted a few new recruits (aka Fresh Fish) at their first Grange event. We held our Saturday evening Flag Retirement ceremony and President Rich Coleman entertained us with another episode of 'Civil War Jeopardy'. Cablevision's News 12 even paid a visit on Sunday to record that day's battle. Let's see if we make it to 18!"

Dating to Colonial Times, the Fort has more than its fair share of history... and ghosts. Wedged between the airport and seaport, it may be way off the beaten path but more than worth the trouble in finding in you enjoy history."

From our website, "Mother Nature could not have delivered finer weather for our first road event in almost two years. Our battalion, the 2nd Federal Rifles, chose Monroe Museum Village as the season's 'MAX' event and this also was our first time visit since 2001. We managed to muster enough men to field a company and thanks to a smaller commissary, we feasted on hard bread, cheese, and a bean & bacon stew. We also celebrated the 86th birthday of one of our own, Jim Cuzzo. All in all, this was a good start in getting back to our travels."

Next Saturday, we'll be heading up to Monroe Museum Village, an event we last attended in 2001. Representatavies from the 9th VA & 30 VA joined us so we could hammer out the details for our Civil War Weekend at the Grange in October."

From our website, "The Nassau County Museum of Art invited the local Civil War community to support their Mort Kuntsler art exhibit with Mr. Kuntsler himself present and signing works for his fans. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative nevertheless we had a good time in our surrealist camp filled with modern art sculptures and many of us left possessing a work from Mr. Kuntsler."

From our website, "The 67th NY, First Long Island made its first visit to the very underrated Governor's Island in New York Harbor. During the Civil War the island was used a POW camp for Confederate prisoners. Two of our own fell in with the 119th NY for the day. We had fantastic weather for mid August: warm, sunny, and not at all humid."

COUNTERMARCH!!! (20 Years Ago) 22 - 23 July 2006: 4th Annual Civil War Reenactment at OBVR

From our website, "This year's event fell the same weekend as the 145th Bull Run reenactment in Virginia. Most of our local cavalry opted to attend that event leaving the field to the infantry and two cannon (courtesy of Jackson's Flying artillery). Like last year, the 119th NY, 52nd NY, 14th Brooklyn plus ourselves camped at the Powell Farm. Unlike last year, the weather was brutally hot and humid making the periodic burst of torrential rain most welcome. Our First Sergeant made his debut as breveted Lieutenant and lead our company on Saturday while Your Correspondent was bumped up in rank from Private to Corporal. Despite the rough conditions, we perservered the full weekend and made the most of the situation."

From our website, "Fortunately, the night's rain ended giving us only gray and even cool skies for our July meeting. We took full advantage of the climate and conducted almost 90 minutes of drill. Now that we have several genuine events lined up for the Autumn, including our Grange event in October, we will finally put our knowledge to use. Special thanks to Pvt. From our website, "As a mocking gesture to General Sheridan's quote 'War is Hell', Mother Nature sent us for the First Battle of the Sesquicentennial weather conditions that can only be described as 'infernal'. With temperatures of over 100 degrees from Friday through Sunday it was a miracle there were not any real deaths on the field. The organizers prepared for just about every contingency but this freak heatwave stretched everyone to their limits. Nevertheless, the 67th NY sent a dozen men down to Virginia and all returned home safely. Never was a reenacting medallion more painfully earned."

From our website, "The 155th Anniversary of First Bull Run was held at Cedar Creek Battlefield and just like the 145th & 150th, Mother Nature sent the mercury well above 100F baking everyone in their own juices. That July weekend seems to be cursed for our community. Anyway, the 67th NY send a large contingent and was able to pass the time the best we could. Special thanks to Mike Boyle for serving as cameraman for the weekend."

From our website, "Our Color Sergeant, Dan Blander, came up with the idea of pitching our Grange event by setting up a stall at Patchogue's Alive at Five festivals that take place over several Thursday evenings in the summer. Each week, several of the members would join Dan in plugging our evening, drumming up recruits, and simpling answering the public's questions."

From our website, "We were invited by the Queens Historical Society to put on a Living History in support of their exhibition on the 15th New York State Militia a/k/a the Hamilton Rifles that was raised in the area. This was our first time at the QHS and also the debut event for a new recruit or 'Fresh Fish'. We took turns exploring the Kingsland Homestead house that was built in 1774. Please be patient with the background noise in the accompanying video. But that's what you get when performing in Queens."

COUNTERMARCH!!! (20 Years Ago) 30 June - 2 July 2006: Living History at Gettysburg National Park

From our website, "Eight men traveled to Gettysburg for the annual Living History at the Pennsylvania Monument in Gettysburg and this turned out to be an exceptional weekend. Arriving on Friday, we visited the Coster Avenue mural north of town and later in the evening joined up with eight members of the 119th NY who were our guests for the weekend. With 16 men total from Long Island, we were able to form our own company, First Company, that was commanded by Lt. Russell Manning of the 28th PA. With the cancelation of the Annual Reenactment that same weekend, the ranks of the Mifflin Guard swelled from the usual five Companies to eight, the largest gathering we have ever seen on the battlefield. There was no Ranger Walk for the Saturday so Colonel Scott Washburn improvised with a march to the High Water Mark. We also stopped at the nearby monument to the 12th NJ, one of the constituent regiments of the Mifflin Guard. Your Correspondent stay a few extra days and had the pleasure of meeting historian Ed Bearrs on Little Round Top."
