Ebola Virus Disease outbreak confirmed in Ituri Province, DRC

Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation and convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting today with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners to reinforce cross-border surveillance, preparedness and outbreak response efforts.

Following consultations with DRC’s Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute, preliminary laboratory results from L’Institut National de Recherche Biomédical - INRB Kinshasa detected Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples tested.

About 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation.

Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship.

He had responded to an email from the ship’s operator informing the passengers of the health event, and presented himself to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, and is receiving care.

In line with the International Health Regulations (IHR), WHO is working with relevant countries to support international contact tracing, to ensure that those potentially exposed are monitored and that any further disease spread is limited.

The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases @nicd_sa, South Africa and the Geneva University Hospitals @hug_ge, Switzerland
The support of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar @PasteurDakar, Senegal and the Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud @ANLIS_Malbran, Argentina has also been critical in responding to this event.

As of 6 May, there are 8 cases, 3 of whom are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.

WHO will continue to work with countries to ensure that the patients, contacts, passengers and crew have the information and support they need to stay safe and prevent spread.

Update: South African scientists confirm that the strain is Andes- which means human-to-human transmission possible between close contacts. Given a high mortality rate and no specific treatments or vaccines, containment super important here. Looks like Spain leading on response (with WHO) now.

There is exactly one hantavirus that transmits between humans. It's been on a cruise ship for three weeks, and the ship is now locked out of port.

The MV Hondius boarded passengers in Ushuaia, Argentina. Gateway to Antarctica, southern tip of Patagonia. The Andes virus is endemic here. In late 2018, the Patagonian town of Epuyén, 870 miles from Ushuaia, had an outbreak that killed at least 11 people through person-to-person spread. The only known hantavirus that does this.

Every other strain, including the Sin Nombre virus that killed Gene Hackman's wife last year, requires you to inhale aerosolized rodent urine or droppings in an enclosed dry space. Deer mice. Dust. Stale air. No human-to-human transmission.

Andes broke that rule. The Hondius left Ushuaia three weeks ago, then visited Antarctica, the Falklands, South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, and Ascension before anchoring off Cape Verde. Hantavirus incubation runs 1 to 8 weeks. The voyage was exactly that window.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome kills 38% of symptomatic cases per CDC. Lungs fill with fluid. No cure exists. One UK passenger has lab-confirmed Andes hantavirus and is in ICU in Johannesburg. Five other suspected cases on board. Cape Verde will not let them dock. 149 people remain at anchor, including 17 Americans.

The doctor CNN interviewed said his first reaction was that the report had to be a misprint. It would have been, if the ship had departed from anywhere else.
