I’ve thought a lot whether or not I should log in and play PoE 2 yesterday leading up to 0.2 launch. I played a LOT on EA launch, more than most and I still felt burned out. None of my friends were excited either, and then we read the patch notes…

Lot of the nerfs made sense (archmage / stat stacking) but then things that were already bad and underused (like flamestrike) also got nuked. Why? Changes to stun and freeze meaning you’ll lose control of your character more, which is the least fun thing that can happen to you in an ARPG.

Breach also got nuked from multiple angles
- nerfed tablet mods
- removed extra rare monster modifier which was the most rewarding mod in the pool
-nerfed density
- less tower overlaps due to atlas changes
-rarity nerf
This means the only mechanic in the game worthy of ‘juicing’ got utterly destroyed.

Then, there is the lack of endgame content. New uniques and gems are cool, and I’m not trying to downplay that, but personally I play these games for the content / gameplay, not to theorycraft builds. I’m sure some cool stuff will come of those uniques and gems. Endgame content vise however, exiles, some new essences (which were already in the game) some new strongboxes (which were already in the game) and a slow moving Tormented spirit does not warrant a new league for me. Apparently not for GGG either because they put them all in Standard as well, further taking away from the hype / exclusivity of new stuff. This was their best chance to really push newcomers to the genre into the ‘new poe league’ hype cycle and I feel like they squandered it.

I remember playing PoE EA launch and thinking ok this is pretty hard but that’s okay, it’s different, and this is the hardest it’s ever going to be. We’ll get better at campaign, we’ll get better gear, it’s only up from here. Based on the reception of 0.2, I was wrong.

All in all PoE 2 needs way more cooking. Hopefully it doesn’t take too many ‘PoE 1 devs’ to keep fixing these issues so we can get on with a banger 3.26 league.

Personal stuff: I know it’s a terrible financial decision for me to skip playing PoE stuff, but I think my streams are the most fun when I’m having fun. I’d be just as miserable playing the current state of PoE 2 as a lot of the other streamers whose clips I’ve seen last night. I’m having a fun time learning WoW mythic dungeons for the first time ever, and doing some chill mount / gold farming, so I will continue to play and stream that. Big Last Epoch update in 12 days, we’ll be blasting that with the boys. Really excited about that too.

Replaying PoE 1 makes me think PoE 2 was a mistake, both are good and bad in different ways, and we could've just have had 1 perfect game instead, Ben might have been right
