@LeoBurtscher Well, you still need AGN and/or stellar feedback to heat up the gas, but the model doesn't matter, because you will always balance cooling. But I actually never tested whether stellar feedback alone could do that.
However, Richard Bower points out an important selection effect: People who don't believe AGNs are important do not go to this conference. :-) "We need a control sample of random astronomers!" #AGNSpecial18
Ryan Hickox: In 2010 we still believed that AGNs are very different from normal galaxy while we now think about Eddington ratio distribution functions and of AGNs as being something normal in the lifetime of an ordinary galaxy. #AGNSpecial18
@LeoBurtscher I would say it depends strongly on the AGN feedback model (see Fig. 9 in Steinborn+15), particularly at high z. Most simulations produce too few quiescent galaxies at high z compared to observations. At low z I would agree that it is not important due to self-regulation.
Therefore look at broad range of ionisation states to find "shocked post star burst galaxies" (SPOGs). Are AGNs active in post-starburst galaxies? Brown+ 2009 found ~ 50%, but Alatalo+ 2017 find only a few percent! #AGNSpecial18
