Gabor Maté just blew my mind on Mel Robbins’ podcast with one simple truth:
“No siblings grow up in the same house. No siblings have the same parents.”
He explained it so clearly, birth order changes everything, parents are in totally different life stages with each kid, money stress comes and goes, and every child’s unique temperament means they experience the exact same parents completely differently. Even loving parents show up differently for each child.
That’s why two siblings can remember the same childhood so wildly differently — one says it was fine, the other carries deep wounds.
This explains so many family conflicts and “why don’t you remember it like I do?” arguments. It brings real compassion into how we see our siblings (and our own parenting).
I’ve seen this play out in my own family and it instantly softened how I view old resentments. We really weren’t raised in the same house after all.
Have you noticed this with your siblings — same childhood, completely different memories?
