I never had PPP but I had PPD.
In the interest of explaining what it’s like, I’ll share my experience of it.
I remember holding my newborn baby and feeling absolutely nothing.
I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t nervous. I wasn’t stressed. I wasn’t … anything. I was a void. That’s when I first knew something was wrong.
Later I began feeling hopeless. I thought I was going to be a terrible mom. God had given me this precious baby. My husband had trusted me with his firstborn child. I felt so unworthy. I felt sure I would screw everything up. I thought I would let my baby down and ruin her childhood and she’d grow up to resent me.
I genuinely believed, at one point, that my husband and baby would be happier if I died. I thought, “He’ll remarry somebody prettier and smarter and better than me. I’m holding him back. They’ll be better off if I’m gone.”
But at the same time, I had an awareness that something was off. I knew that — logically — I had a new baby, a husband who loves me, a safe home … I should be happy … but all I felt was despair and this choking tightness in my chest.
So I told my husband.
I called my doctor.
She diagnosed me with PPD and prescribed an antidepressant and sleep. So much sleep. That was always the main cause for me; sleep deprivation.
I swear, sleep deprivation will kill you. I don’t care if you’re a big strong stoic hairy man, if you lose enough sleep, you will mentally unravel.
My husband was extremely supportive and helpful. If I recall correctly, I took medication for 4 months before I felt a shift of some kind, and knew I no longer needed it. I stopped taking it and I was fine.
I’ve enjoyed being a mother ever since. Sure, there are hard days, but not like that.
Cuidar a las audiencias… ¿o cuidar al gobierno de las audiencias? 🤔
