Religious leaders of the Tigray Orthodox Church, See of Selama Kesate Berhan said they will proceed with the anointing ceremony of the 10 episcopates who were elected on Sunday last week to lead dioceses of the Tigray Orthodox Church both in the Tigray region and abroad, regional media Tigray TV reported.

The religious leaders in Tigray said the anointment ceremony will take place today afternoon in the city of Axum, one of the holiest sites of the Orthodox Tewahdo Church in #Ethiopia.

The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian #Orthodox Tewahdo Church (EOTC) in Addis Abeba has been repeatedly opposed the decision by the religious leader of Tigray Orthodox Church, including issuing a caution that it will take legal steps to stop the move.

Brief History

Some 1700 years ago a small boat was capsized at the coast of Red Sea, and its sailors were captured by locals. In the boat were among others two children of Syrian origins who were travelling with their uncle. The name of the boys were Frumentius and his brother Edesius. The locals took the two boys and handed them as slaves to the King of Axum.

The two boys soon gained the favour of the king, who raised them to positions of trust. Shortly before his death, the king freed the Syrian brothers. The widowed queen, however, insisted on them to remain at the court and assist her in the education of the young princes, Ezana and Sezana, and in the administration of the kingdom during the princes’ minority. So both Frumentius and Edesius remained in Axum Royal Court and used their influence to spread Christianity.

When princes Ezana and Sezana came of age Edesius travelled back to Syria but Frumentius travelled to Alexandria, where he requested Athanasius, Patriarch of Alexandria, to send a bishop and some priests as missionaries to Axum. By St. Athanasius’s own account, he believed Frumentius to be the most suitable person for the job and consecrated him as the first Archbishop of Axum (circa 328). St. Frumentius returned to Axum (now named Abuna Selama Kesate Berhan), where he erected his Episcopal See at Axum, then converted and baptized Emperor Ezana and Emperor Sezana. In turn the emperors declared christianity state religion of the Axumite Empire (making Axum the first Christian Empire in the world).

Abuna Selama Kesate Berhan is also credit for the first Ge'ez translation of the New Testament, and being involved in the development of Ge'ez script from an abjad (consonantal-only) into an abugida (syllabic).

Axum awaits Ordination of Episcopates

#Tigray Orthodox Tewahdo Church the See of Selama Kesate Birhan will ordain 10 Episcopates in #Axum on Sunday.
Residents of the town of Axum, a historic city 200 kilometres from the capital #Mekelle, await the ordination of 10 new episcopates that are expected to serve in dioceses in Southern, South-eastern and Western Zones of Tigrai as well as in Northern America, Europe and Australia in abroad.
Four Archbishops in Tigrai, who announced the formation of new & independent structure on May 7, 2022, accusing Ethiopia Orthodox Tewahdo Church for not voicing against genocidal war on Tigrai, have arrived in Axum to attend the ceremony.
