UNDERSTANDING IP RATINGS ON SMARTPHONES
Ever seen “IP68” or “IP54” on a phone spec sheet and wondered what it means?

IP Rating (Ingress Protection Rating) is an international standard used to measure how well a device is protected against:
• Solids — dust, dirt, sand
• Liquids — water, splashes, rain

The rating appears as:
IP + TWO NUMBERS
Example: IP68

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN:
- FIRST DIGIT — Dust/Solid Protection (0–6)
This tells you how resistant the phone is to dust and particles.
0 = No protection
6 = Completely dust-proof
So when you see “6”, the device is fully sealed against dust.

- SECOND DIGIT — Water Protection (0–9)
This measures resistance against water exposure.
0 = No protection
8 = Can survive water immersion
9/9K = Can withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets

COMMON PHONE IP RATINGS:
A. IP68 — Premium Flagship Standard
• Fully dust-proof
• Water-resistant enough to survive accidental drops in water
• Common on flagship Samsung, iPhone and Xiaomi devices
NOTE:
Water resistance is NOT permanent. It weakens over time due to heat, drops, repairs and wear.

B. IP67
• Fully dust-proof
• Can survive shallow water immersion (usually up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)

C. IP54
• Protected against dust particles
• Resistant to splashes and light rain ONLY
• DO NOT submerge it in water

D. IPX8
• “X” means it was NOT tested for dust protection
• Still has strong water resistance

WHAT ABOUT IP69/IP69K?
This is mostly found on rugged/heavy-duty devices, not regular flagship phones.

IP69/IP69K devices can:
• Resist dust completely
• Survive high-pressure hot water jets
• Handle industrial environments and steam cleaning

Simple comparison:
IP68 = survives accidental pool drop
IP69K = survives power washer and steam cleaning

IMPORTANT THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW:
• Water resistance does NOT mean waterproof
• Salt water and soapy water can still damage phones
• Opening the phone reduces resistance
• Cracked screens/back glass weaken protection
• Charging a wet phone is risky
• Warranty usually does NOT cover water damage
Before buying a phone because of “IP rating”, understand what level of protection you actually need.
Specs are useful, but proper handling still matters.
