Elin was 27. A young woman on her way home after a night out with friends, the kind of ordinary evening that should have ended safely.

On the night of 26 September 2010 she stepped off the tram in Biskopsgården. She never made it further.

She was followed into a wooded area by 23-year-old Ephrem Yohannes, an Ethiopian citizen. There he attacked her, tried to rape her, and then beat her to death with rocks.

The violence was savage.

Yohannes was arrested two days later. In court he laughed in the faces of Elin’s grieving parents.

He denied everything at first, but the evidence: surveillance images, his DNA, her blood on his clothes, left no doubt.

In 2011 he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for murder and attempted rape, and ordered deported for life. After serving his time he was returned to Ethiopia.

Elin never got to grow older. She never got to continue her family’s legacy.

She is one of far too many whose lives were stolen in Europe, by men who should never have been there.
