When ADMU decided to make a public spectacle out of the tragedy WITHOUT informing the families and seeking their consent, it became a matter of public interest.
I agree, some details SHOULD be reserved strictly for the immediate families but the actions to be taken after that?No
Wala pa ata ako nakitang former ADMU player na nag side sa families ng victims. Parang halos lahat pinagtatanggol yung school at "team building" na yan kesyo ganyan din sila before. Like, wtf?!! Alam nilang may muntik ng mamatay before pero walang ni isang nag call out?! 🤬
40 minutes in the water before they got rescued, 40 MINUTES. HAD YOU HAD ANY EXPERIENCED LIFEGUARDS ON STANDBY IT WOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN THAT LONG FOR THEM TO BE RESCUED. HAD YOU PRIORITIZED SAFETY OF THE ATHLETES, NO FAMILY WOULD BE GRIEVING NOW.
This is so off. Bakit yung namatayan yung nag-press con?! Bakit yung coach from Davao? Bakit sila yung nag-explain sa public?!
Nasan na si Coach Tab Baldwin? Yung coaching staff ng Ateneo? Yung ibang players? And di pa daw nahaharap ni Tab yung nanay ni Rene?! @ateneodemanilau
Rene’s mother basically confirmed:
1. After the 430 pm call telling her na wala na si Rene, never na nag update ang Ateneo. The next thing na nakita ng nanay ni Rene ay yung mga photos na kumalat sa internet. There was radio silence from ADMU.
2. Governor at Congressman ng Agusan na ang tumulong makapunta pamilya ni Rene
3. Two coaches lang humarap and they only did so today.
4. Incomplete ang explanation.
5. They werent briefed by the pnp prior to pnp’s presscon.
6. Ateneo said na sasagutin ang travel basta magsabi lang pamilya ni Rene.
7. HINDI NAGBIGAY NG ASSURANCE ANG ATENEO NA THEY WILL INVESTIGATE AND PROVIDE TRANSPARENCY.
8. Hindi pa desidido ang pamilya ni Rene if magfa-file sila ng kaso. Decision will be made after Rene’s burial.
9. HIS MOTHER IS WAITING FOR ATENEO’s PROPER EXPLANATION AND IS GIVING THEM CHANCE TO DO SO.

LOUDER. Honestly disappointed with Shaggy Almond and Anton Assistio. Especially Anton, since ikaw pa na nagsalita dun sa podcast about it.
Walanag namatay sainyo noon but ngayon, meron. Dalawa pa nga eh. Leche.
agree. in the first place, ateneo did not properly reach out to her about what happened. do people expect her to be rational at this point and do some fact-finding of her own? she’s deprived of the truth and you expect her (and the public) to give ateneo some grace??
hindi lng to first time na may namatay na UAAP players. Rene and Divine are 3rd and 4th. Meron pang 2 previous UAAP players na namatay while training & workouts: Israel Friday (UP) and Ashlyn Nabong (NU).
It’s time to look on how these UAAP schools handle “trainings”
Let's talk about what Ateneo is comfortable being loud about.
They were vocal against Duterte's drug war. Their faculty and administration signed statements, held forums, gave interviews.
They positioned themselves as the moral conscience of the nation.
Now two of their own student-athletes are dead and Rene Baterbonia's mother flown to Manila from Agusan del Sur asking why nobody told her what kind of training her 19-year-old son was being put through.
Where is that same moral energy now? Where are the press conferences? Where is the institutional accountability they so readily demand from everyone else?
Moral outrage, apparently, is a luxury reserved for politics. Not for the boys they recruited from the provinces to win championships.
If you’re worried about misinformation, hindi ang nanay ni Rene o ang taumbayan ang may kasalanan. Ateneo pa rin. Who lied to the family about the purpose of the trip? Who hid details from them? Who refuses to clarify and clear up the air? Hindi ba Ateneo ang sagot dyan?
Loss of life (young life at that) brought about by avoidable circumstances that the victims were exposed to by authority figures that were supposed to care and nurture them - is a tragedy that requires accountability. No it won’t bring back Divine and Rene, but we cannot allow people in power to be protected when their authority and status were wielded to put young men in precarious situations that took their lives. There’s anecdotes on record of precedent, there’s a grieving mother asking for the most basic details amid official statements saying they are ‘working closely’ with the families.
Investigate this to the fullest. Basketball is by no means more important than protecting our young people, most especially those who come from backgrounds that force them and their families to look at a roster spot, game minutes, a coaching staff’s favor and approval - as tickets to a better life.
Pay close attention to who says what, if anything at all. If you’re not enraged by the avoidable accident that took the lives of two young men, if your instinct is to protect an institution’s reputation over condemning those responosible for two boys dying, if you would rather be silent because you’re worried about relationships or your place in the industry, then you’re part of the problem.
This was avoidable. This was negligent. It’s only basketball, ffs. There are people responsible. Hold them accountable.
You know what’s insensitive?
Former Ateneo players being defensive of the institution when people are clamoring for accountability; when the families of the victims are saying they are being kept in the dark. That’s what is insensitive. Nobody asked their piece.
In short, dinefend niya lang yung mga “false narratives” online pero hindi niya dineny yung extensive training? Wala man lang nabanggit about being accountable sa ganong klase ng training?
Good thing nakasurvive ka, bad thing is may mga hindi 🤷🏻
who the hell is going to participate in traning if they know they're going to die?? this is such an insensitive statement, why is your first thought to defend and clear up "false narratives"? check your humanity.
FORMER BLUE EAGLE SPEAKS UP 🗣️
“I do feel the need to post this after seeing a ton of false narratives blasted online. As someone who experienced that training camp during my time with ADMU that they also just went through as well, I understand the gravity of the training itself and what we willingly put ourselves through in hopes to boost conditioning ahead of the season and become closer as a team. There are a few things I’d like to address though based on other social media posts.
1. There is absolutely no way that this had anything to do with “initiation”. The team goes there for the sole purpose of conditioning, getting stronger, becoming a closer team due to the hardships faced during that specific beach training. Between working your ass off on that beach and a little bit of time to rest and eat there is no time to even think of doing any kind of initiation there. Each player is so tired from the work they put in the whole day that they wouldn’t even have enough energy to do something like that. Those players love each other and wouldn’t put each other in an initiation situation like that where there could be a grave outcome that way.
2. Don’t take those interview clips from some of my previous teammates out of context and try to spin your own story out of it for content. Yes, that was probably the most physically and mentally draining training that I’ve ever experienced but there was nothing done to us that would put us in immediate danger. So to the people spreading news that the players were forced to wear weights on their feet in the water, check your source first because I highly doubt the coaching staff would allow or even think to do that.
Allow the families, teammates, coaches, and ADMU community to grieve and let the investigation take its course based on facts before spreading fake narratives and adding fuel to the fire. The only people there are the team and coaches and staff. They are the ones who know the truth so let’s let things take their natural course before making horrid accusations.”
-Shaggy Allmond, Former Ateneo Blue Eagle
investigate this. "providing support to the families" is not enough. why are we allowing kids "team building" activities in an area known for its unpredictable waves? what "team building" leads to TWO students drowning to their deaths?
admu’s statement on rene baterbonia’s death was deeply insensitive. wdym his mother, his family, had not been properly informed before the university made a public statement?! the family deserved to hear it first & be given time to process the loss. prestigious univ pero ganito?!
