In April 2020, Dartavius Barnes was pulled over by Springfield, Illinois, police officers for an alleged traffic violation. During the stop, officers conducted a search of his vehicle and discovered a small metallic container. Suspecting it contained illegal drugs, the officers performed a field test on the substance inside the container. To Barnes' horror, the substance was his two-year-old daughter's ashes, which he had been keeping in the container as a way to remember her after her tragic death in 2019.

The officers realized their mistake after performing the test and returned the ashes to Barnes. The situation left Barnes deeply distressed, feeling that his daughter's remains had been disrespected. He subsequently filed a lawsuit against the Springfield Police Department, alleging emotional distress and seeking accountability for the mishandling of his daughter's ashes. The incident sparked outrage and highlighted concerns over police practices and the need for sensitivity in handling personal belongings during searches.
