While I was striking in Windermere yesterday, demanding an end to sewage pollution, guess what was happening in Ambleside? Ambleside wastewater treatment works was discharging untreated sewage into the River Rothay. This goes into Englands largest lake which sits within a national park and @UNESCO world heritage site.

This cloudy concoction is full of everything from bacteria, viruses, parasites, to phosphorus. The water industry insists this is 95% freshwater, which, as you can see, is clearly not true. How much was released from this spill? We don’t know, as United Utilities does not collect volumetric data.

We need an end to all treated and untreated sewage discharged into Windermere.
