Early in my career, I worked at a company where the CEO did something small that I've carried with me for over 20 years.

We had a massive corporate event. Hundreds of employees, catered food, the whole production. I was a junior guy back then, just happy to be in the room.

At the end of the night, the CEO was doing the rounds, shaking hands with the department heads and VPs. Standard executive stuff.

Then he walked past all the suits, went straight to the back of the room, and found the woman who had been clearing plates all night.

He looked her in the eye and said, "Maria, the food was incredible tonight. Thank you."

The room went quiet. Most of the executives didn't even know her name. Some of them had been stepping around her for three hours like she was furniture.

Later, I found out the CEO made it a point to learn the name of every single support staff member in the building. Maintenance crew, Kitchen staff, Security guards, All of them.

I asked him about it once at a company lunch, He told me something I'll never forget.

He said when he was in business school, a professor gave a quiz. The last question was: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the lecture hall?"

Nobody knew, Everyone left it blank.

The professor said it counted for 20% of the grade. The class was furious. The professor just said: "In your careers, you will meet thousands of people. Every single one of them matters, If you can't be bothered to learn the name of the person who cleans the room you work in, you don't deserve to lead anyone."

The CEO told me he went back the next day and introduced himself to the cleaning woman. Her name was Dorothy. He said he's never forgotten it.

I've hired a lot of people since then. I've fired a few too. And I'll tell you this: the fastest way to fail my interview isn't a bad resume. It's watching how you treat the receptionist when you think nobody's paying attention.
