John Lomax traveled the South, Appalachia, visiting farms and prisons recording the unspoilt voices of people who still sang America’s oldest songs.

In 1933, he put a 315-pound disc recorder in the trunk of his car that cut grooves directly into aluminum discs and took his son Alan with him across the country.

Alan Lomax, in his own field ethnography work, recorded Muddy Waters before he was famous.

Those field recordings—are in the thousands and cover decades of American songs from the heart.

Today, the archives are kept in the Library of Congress.
