On November 30, 1960, Neil Armstrong, then a 30-year-old civilian research pilot for the NACA (soon to become NASA), made his first flight in the North American X-15 rocket plane, 65 years ago today. This was the beginning of an intense two-year period in which he would fly the X-15 seven times, reaching a peak altitude of 207,500 feet (39.2 miles) and a top speed of Mach 5.74 (3,989 mph).Key highlights of Armstrong’s X-15 career:First flight: 30 November 1960 (X-15-1, flight 3-8-16). A relatively gentle checkout flight reaching Mach 1.75 and 48,840 ft.
Highest altitude: 9 November 1962 (flight 3-33-56). Reached 207,500 ft (63.2 km), officially qualifying him as an astronaut under USAF/NASA criteria in use at the time.
Fastest flight: 26 April 1962 (flight 3-21-31). Hit Mach 5.74.
Most famous incident: 20 April 1962 (flight 3-19-36, the “bounce” into the atmosphere). Armstrong accidentally overshot the landing site at Edwards AFB by about 40 miles, skipping off the atmosphere like a stone because he held the nose up too long after re-entry. He glided back safely to Edwards, landing on the dry lakebed with only seconds of control power remaining. The flight is still studied today as a classic example of how quickly things can go wrong at the edge of space.

Armstrong flew the X-15 between his duties testing other exotic aircraft (Century-series fighters, paraglider research vehicles, B-29 mother ships, etc.). In total he logged more than 2,400 flight hours in over 200 different types and models of aircraft before being selected as an astronaut in NASA’s second group in September 1962.The experience he gained in the X-15—manual control of a hypersonic vehicle with almost no aerodynamic lift during re-entry, reaction controls in near-vacuum, and high-altitude physiological effects—was directly applicable to the Gemini and Apollo programs.
