I just got off the phone with my bank after waiting 1/2 hr for someone to pick up - just to confirm my CC ac fees which should be so easy to locate on the platform - not in this case & then to learn that my fees have jumped. My bank - along with Australia’s other major banks - has just executed massive credit card fee increases and rate hikes. These changes officially took effect on 30 September 2026, intentionally timed just hours before the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) card surcharge ban came into force. The RBA's ban prevents merchants from charging transaction fees, but it also capped the interchange fees that banks can charge businesses. To recoup that lost revenue, banks are directly shifting the cost burden onto credit card holders.
Before these changes, banks relied heavily on that 0.80% credit card interchange fee to fund consumer perks. Since that revenue stream is now cut by more than 1/2 the banks have now turned around and raised cardholder account fees and reward program fees to claw back the money.
