"'Ha ha' and 'he he' signify laughter in Latin and in English, because they are cried out when laughing."
Wonderful evidence here in Ælfric's Grammar that 'ha ha' has been the sound and spelling of laughter in English since at least the 11th century and the Old English period.
this Note is out as of just last week in Shakespeare Quarterly! happily co-authored with the ✨Rdeam Team✨!! (aka #PrintandProbability gang) 📜 I had such fun spending last summer sleuthing old books for this project with @LauraSDeLuca &co. 🤩 https://t.co/cnhYnAwuJv

if I keep giving my twitter handle out after conference papers I should perhaps look halfway alive on here … it’s summer research season! thanks to the Fat Bodies in Early Modern Drama folks and @britgrad (+for the swag) for rounding out a ✨productive✨ June in the UK
this CFP got me so excited when it came out 🤩 (can we start saying CFPs “drop,” like albums?) & it was so much fun to present this morning—even though I was as “fat and out of breath” as a fencing Hamlet after leaving laptop in hotel room
@JumboCarnation this is very Not Your Point here but I never filled out such a thing! do I still work there?? at any moment could some drunken weeknight manager call me to cover a venue section serving mediocre wine to the suburban fans of some problematic, washed-up musician?? 🥵🥵🥵
This 25 & 26 February sees our third conference with our friends @ldn_shakespeare, exploring 'Home & Early Modernity'.
@LSCGlobeGrad22 will reflect on what 'home' means to us now, and in Early Modern England & Europe.

about this I’ll just say that there are some younger folks in my early modern lit seminar who did not stay up past 11 eagerly watching every offering of Comedy Central c. 2002 (due to being infants) and, well, they were a bit confused when they googled “Milton memes”
I think what’s holding me back from what would undoubtedly be groundbreaking scholarship on Shakes’ Roman plays is that I can spell neither“Emperor” nor “Caesar”
