Oh this is fascinating.
The first time I saw this, it blew my mind.
The long bills on shorebirds look hard - but the birds can bend them at will. This is called rhynchokinesis. The video showing this is really interesting ...
@eyeonthefly My ears hurt looking at that picture
Come play w fairy-wren some time- long delicate legs, short stubby wings and little ping pong ball bodies. They managing to get most of the way through the net, while somehow catching and twisting more than one panel around itself
[ #inktober2023 Day 1: #Dream]
Taking another swipe at making it though an Inktober (in general) using #birds as I can manage.
Will also do mostly digital so I can push myself to figuring out this digital art thing moreโฆ
Our new paper in @nature shows that protected areas work. They slow wildlife declines by as much as five times. Groups like amphibians and birds benefit most from protected areas. Stellar work with @JustiNowakowski @jessieldk@LOFrishkoff

Sleeping Blue-bum Bees! ๐๐ด
Here are the SPECTACULAR Northern Blue Banded Bees (Amegilla walkeri) roosting from my video the other day! ๐
Males group together to roost at night on a small exposed stick like this. If a predator was to walk up the branch and shake it they would all disperse! ๐
These native bees are so special and are such important warriors everyday in pollinating and keeping our eco-systems healthy! ๐ผ๐ณ
Have you ever been lucky enough to find these bees roosting in your yard? The genus can be found Australia wide with multiple species!
I found this old photo of an 8 year old me in a school play as a professor teaching about dinosaur extinction. 40 years later here I am in my academic regalia supporting my graduating conservation biology masters student who is trying to avert bird extinction!
@evornithology Had aButcher bird completely remove legs from Zebra finches in outdoor aviaries (set up so this isnโt easy, but finches still land on wire). One bird died, another one healed like it never had that leg - named him Leg-o-less (yes in mock of LotR character. He lived a long life.
