Western Human Rights institutions are intellectually and morally bankrupted. They accepted the words of agenda driven ASPI from people who took satellite images with child like imagination and pass it off as credible research. They're too lazy to do the most cursory verification.
Melhorem a vida do próprio povo.
Chinese ppl dressing up in Hanfu: “that’s problematic! They are performing Han supremacy and erasing minority identities!”
Chinese ppl dressing up in minority costumes: “that’s colonialism! They are fetishizing minority cultures and doing a cultural appropriation!”
Hey! Have you considered that dressing up is fun? Have you tried just having some fun? Or is being a sour wokescold all day what you want to do for the rest of your one wild and precious life?
LOL. Xinjiang is open to visitors from all over the world, most of it visa-free for over 18 months now. Millions of tourists have gone there and seen that everything is fine, and nobody believes your bullshit anymore. So eat shit 😀
Just a decade ago, the very phrase « Starbucks in Xinjiang » would have made no sense whatsoever. Around that time Xinjiang, was in the throes of jihadi terrorism.
In 2014 just 3-4 km away from the new Starbucks at the Grand Bazaar, five assailants ploughed 2 SUVs into the crowds, hurling dozens of explosives along the way. 43 people were killed, including 4 attackers. 90 or so were injured. They were morning shoppers and old ppl taking their exercise at the North Gongyuan st market.
The attackers were identified by Chinese authorities as a part of ETIM/TIP and deeply embedded in within the global Salafi-Jihadist movement. They have a multi-decadal alliance with Al Qaeda, operates in Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban and have deployed thousands of fighters into the Syrian civil war fighting with jihadi coalitions like HTS.
The goal: to promote the concept of violent Jihad as religious duty to every Muslim and to build a global caliphate.
This is not a homegrown movement, but the same transnational jihadi networks the US battled in the Global War on Terror. Some Uyghur fighters even joined ISIS because Al Qaeda was too soft and accommodationist…they are not satisfied fighting for Xinjiang province, they want total, borderless, global jihad.
There are about 12 million Uyghurs. Traditionally they are of the Sufi tradition. These ETIM/TIP guys are a fraction of a fraction, but they messed everyone’s shit up. 74-year-old moderate cleric Jume Tahir, the Uyghur head imam of China’s biggest mosque, was stabbed to death by young radicals after condemning separatist violence. Any Muslim that did not support their salafist-jihadi vision was a legitimate target.
A decade and change later, Xinjiang is totally safe. Open for business, open for tourists. And people are complaining the baristas are dancing in the Starbucks?
Just the fact that there is a Starbucks where you can go and get an overpriced bullshit latte in Xinjiang is a fucking miracle. For Han and Uyghur (and Kazakh, Tajik etc etc) alike.
Even Japan's master, the USA, will not allow Japan to go too far in terms of militarism, and certainly doesn't stand with Japan, let alone the rest of the world.
Shinjiro Koizumi san, no one cares about what China, North Korea and Russia have to say about militarism. These three are authoritarian regimes run by three “never stepping down” dictators. All of them are currently involved in at least one war while assisting in others. Russia is attacking Ukraine. North Korea is helping Russia attack Ukraine while testing its nuclear weapons. China has declared the possibility of a military takeover of Taiwan. The rest of the world has common sense. Protecting yourself from authoritarian regimes is common sense. The rest of the world stands with Japan.
Japan's defense minister just challenged China, Russia and North Korea to say it to his face.
They've been calling Japan's defense buildup "new militarism." Shinjiro Koizumi's response today: if you believe that, come talk to us directly. Japan stays open to dialogue.
Then he gave them a number. North Korea has launched missiles more than twice as often this year compared to last. Japan has launched zero.
This isn't new rhetoric from him. Back in May, Koizumi made the same point at a major security forum: Japan has no nuclear weapons and no strategic bombers, while a country that has plenty of both is the one calling Japan's defense posture dangerous.
China has pushed the "new militarism" label hard since January, tying it to Japan's rising defense budget, loosened arms export rules, and discussion of counterstrike capabilities. Japan is also now debating whether nuclear weapons and nuclear submarines should even be part of the conversation, something Koizumi says shouldn't be treated as taboo.
Japan still officially holds to its three non-nuclear principles. But the message today was simple: question Japan's defense buildup to our face, or stop pointing fingers from the sidelines.
If either of these guys were honest about China, they’d have to admit something that would be very inconvenient for their careers:
China is nothing like the dystopian hellscape they make money portraying it as.
Yes, Chinese people earn less than Americans. They also have substantially lower living costs, extremely high homeownership, modern infrastructure throughout the country, and surveys have repeatedly shown remarkably high satisfaction with the central government.
Now compare that with the United States.
Leave the wealthy parts of major US cities and you’ll find plenty of poverty, a homelessness epidemic, people drowning in medical debt, families who can’t afford basic healthcare, and a population with historically low trust in its own government.
Does that make America “a very poor country”? Of course not. Because that would be an intellectually dishonest way to describe a massive, complicated country.
And that's exactly what these two are doing with China.
Grant literally wrote a book warning Americans about a coming war with China. Fear of China sells books.
Jan works for The Epoch Times, a media outlet founded by Falun Gong practitioners that has spent decades fiercely opposing the Chinese government.
These guys aren't giving you some objective revelation about China. They have an obvious point of view, and somehow every story ends with the same conclusion: CHINA BAD.
Never listen to these clowns tell you what China is like.
Go to China. Get outside Shanghai and Shenzhen. Visit the smaller cities and countryside. Talk to actual Chinese people.
I guarantee the China you experience will look nothing like the garbage they are pedaling here on X.
