The 91-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen, a staunch opponent of Communism, attended the trial of Catholic convert and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong today, according to @frances_hui. Cardinal Zen know that his red robe symbolizes martyrdom, the willingness to die for faith.

If found guilty under the Chinese Communist Party’s national security law, Jimmy, who has already served around 1000 days in prison, could face a life sentence. The charges against him include collusion with foreign forces. His Apple Daily newspaper was forcefully closed by the China-backed government two years ago.

Cardinal Zen played an important role in his conversion to Catholicism.
