The #OlympicGames showcase sport for what it is, a joyous, wonderful and glorious thing. But sport is also a double-edged sword. For every victory there must also be defeat. Where there’s delight for one, there’s also disappointment for another. The ecstasy and agony, the delight and despair, the joy and sorrow are all part of the rich tapestry of sport. And the obvious desire by the athletes to do well and perform to their best, accentuates that joy or sorrow of the success or perceived failure in Olympic competition. And those contrasting emotions at opposite ends of the spectrum, make Olympic sport utterly compulsive viewing for us spectators. Records were achieved at the badminton with @ViktorAxelsen and Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin retaining their titles. Dreams were both realised and shattered. We saw the unbearable cruelty of sport with a catastrophic injury to @CarolinaMarin when so close to a second Olympic final, after battling back from 2 previous knee surgeries, and the kindness and respect shown by her opponent He Bing Jiao in her reaction to the injury, and the gesture of holding the Spanish Olympic pin on the podium. Despite the cauldron of pressure and the intense desire to achieve, what shone through was the continuous sportsmanship shown by our Olympic badminton players. Whether it was crushing disappointment, or overwhelming delight, time and time again players greeted their opponents with a smile and a warm and genuine embrace in either congratulation or compassion.
