They killed a 21-year-old rapper in prison. No one knows how.

Erfan Mirzaei, a 21-year-old rapper arrested during Iran’s January protests.

His “crime”? A video on his phone showing that he had attended protests.

The regime used that video to accuse him of moharebeh (“waging war against God”) and sentence him to death.

Now, no one can say for certain how Erfan died.

Some reports say he was secretly executed early Sunday morning, September 6, without his family being informed. Others, citing people close to him, say he died after months of torture and beatings aimed at forcing a confession.

When his body was returned, his family reportedly found his hands, legs and pelvis broken, with bruises and swelling covering his face and body.

His family says they had previously been threatened not to speak about his fate.

Even his burial was kept secret. Authorities reportedly refused to allow him to be buried in Isfahan and buried him under heavy security in the village of Gharghen in Faridan.

We don’t know whether Erfan was executed or beaten to death in prison. His family doesn’t know either.

But we know this:
Iran’s regime has silenced the voice of a 21-year-old artist forever.

China runs the largest environmental deficit on the planet. It burns more coal than the rest of the world combined, floods global markets with subsidized products that destroy local industries from Brazil to Germany, and fishes out oceans that belong to everyone. And yet Pew and Gallup find that across Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia, China now polls better than the United States. The explanation is uncomfortable: America is losing the contest of narratives by choice.

China shows up with ports, railways and loans. The terms are often predatory, but the pitch is respectful. American leadership, meanwhile, talks about acquiring Greenland, absorbing Canada and taking back the Panama Canal. To a voter in Copenhagen or Panama City, one superpower offers infrastructure and the other offers annexation. Every demand for Greenland is a Chinese talking point. Every tariff on a friend confirms the story Beijing tells the Global South: that America is imperial and China is merely transactional.
The substantive case against China is overwhelming: intellectual property theft, dumping, debt traps, the Uyghurs. America should win this argument in a walk. Strength attracts and coercion repels. America built the most successful alliance system in history by being the country others wanted to join, never the country others feared being swallowed by. China has no allies, only clients. The free world follows America because it chooses to, and no empire was ever loved into existence by threatening its friends.
