In the fast paced world of recruitment, numbers often speak louder than words. Be like una no know sha

Recently, I shared some high profile job openings with my network of promising candidates. The positions boasted an enticing net pay of 1 million naira, a figure that would make even the most seasoned professionals raise an eyebrow.

Yet, here's the kicker, the feedback from the recruiter was astonishing. Several candidates were apparently asking for just 300k, which made her conclude the candidate wasn’t good enough for the job or perhaps was just desperate to get something doing with no actual value.

Now, before you drop your jaw on the keyboard, let's unpack this phenomenon:

1. The Underestimation Game

Lack of Market Awareness: Perhaps these candidates are blissfully unaware of their actual market value. In an industry where information is king, not knowing your worth could lead to royal underbidding.

Fear of Rejection: There's a psychological aspect at play here. Some might pitch low to get a foot in the door, fearing that their true expectations might scare off potential employers. (Na lie!!!)

2. The Confidence Conundrum

Imposter Syndrome: Even the brightest minds can sometimes doubt their own capabilities. This lack of self confidence can translate into conservative salary demands, as if they're not quite sure they're worth the million naira tag.

Negotiation Naivety: Not everyone is born with the art of negotiation, I know. Some candidates might simply not know how to navigate the salary conversation, settling for less out of negotiation inexperience (try dey learn and do research)

3. Miscommunication or Misinformation

Misreading the Offer: Could it be a simple case of misunderstanding the terms? Maybe the million naira figure got lost in translation, or perhaps the candidates thought it was too good to be true.

Information Overload: With so much data at our fingertips, it's easy to get lost in a sea of salary benchmarks and industry standards, leading to a conservative guess rather than an informed demand (I know, try streamlining research results).

4. Economic Anxieties

Recession Paranoia: Even if the economy's doing well, the shadows of past downturns might make candidates play it safe, fearing economic instability.

5. The Ethical Angle is another thing

Guilt Over Greed:There's a moral debate here. Some might genuinely feel that asking for too much is akin to greed, opting instead for a figure that feels 'just right' to their conscience (No dey do am o).

So, here's my question: why are some candidates lowballing themselves into oblivion? Ehn!

Is it a lack of self worth, societal pressure, or simply a strategic blunder? The industry thrives on innovation, but maybe it's time we innovated our approach to self valuation too sha
