Artists, like everyone else, wantcompensation for our hard work and unique skills. Corporations will never offer us money unless they’re forced to by collective pressure. We need to talk about this issue more openly so we can demand better and actually get paid.

The rise of social media promised artists the potential for independent employment, an incredible opportunity most of us wouldn’t have been able to achieve otherwise. Unfortunately, it’s become clear that the reality of being an artist on social media is far from the promise. 🧵

As more artists are working as content creators, it’s important that we have access to labor protection and guaranteed compensation. Right now, artists are working full-time social media jobs for free, and that’s super fucked up. It’s not our fault that the system is exploitative

It’s counterintuitive but my healthiest creativity habits are:
1. Working in my sketchbook whenever I watch TV (and watching loads of shows)
2. Brainstorming in my notes app whenever I’m thinking about work
3. Drafting a social media post every morning over coffee

We can only develop a healthy relationship to work if we don’t overestimate our productivity. We have to factor in distractions, breaks, slumps in energy, and the days where we simply can’t get anything done. The worst thing we can do is assume we’ll always be at our best.

Organizing my art toolbox helps me get in the mood to use them while clearing up my mental space

When I can’t focus on making art, I work on simple projects:
1. Organize my art supplies
2. Deep clean my studio
3. Flip through my old sketch books
4. Look at art books
5. Watch a movie while I scribble absentmindedly

Oh and most important:
Put my phone down!!

You never reach the end of your To-Do list. If you wait until you finish everything you “should” do before you start what you want to do, you’ll spend your life prioritizing shallow busy work. The right time to do what you love is now

Inspiration is the active process of engaging with something, letting it spark new questions, and opening up new channels of inquiry that you can’t resist.

Liking is passive, inspiration is active.
